CASE STUDY
A large Human & Social Services client was concerned about rising Workers’ Compensation costs resulting from their organic growth in payroll as well as affiliations with other organizations. With a Guaranteed Cost Premium of over $1,700,000 the client was looking for options to lower their Workers’ Compensation premiums and costs. USI’s Analytics team reviewed historic payroll and loss data to develop an accurate view of expected future Workers’ Compensation claims. Based on the team’s analysis, a High Deductible Program was recommended. Despite being risk adverse, the client entered into a High Deductible Program based on USI’s in-depth analytics review and comfort with USI’s claims management expertise. First policy year results, which are now over 24 months old, show a current net savings to the client of $727,342. This savings is based on comparing the Guaranteed Cost Premium of $1,762,489 versus the High Deductible Program Costs of $460,100, Claims and Expenses of $523,065 and Reserves of $80,982. The second policy year with the High Deductible Program just ended with similar results.

A USI Human & Social Services (H & SS) client focused on serving individuals with complex special needs inquired about the adequacy of their Umbrella and Directors’ & Officers’ (D&O) limits. The client has several residential sites as well as fairly significant automobile and transportation exposure. USI conducted a benchmarking analysis of our H & SS clients in the region and after extensive review and discussion with the client increased the Umbrella and D&O Limits to $10,000,000. The client subsequently incurred a significant Professional Liability loss – which resulted in a settlement of close to $6,000,000. Throughout the claim adjudication process, the Client and its Board of Directors were comfortable with the limits in place – which provided them with peace of mind and enabled them to continue running the organization with uninterrupted services for the community.
